The Lords of Greenwich - By Robert Sheldon

Written in the style of an authentic British folk tune, this is an original composition inspired by the music of Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. A jaunty theme greets the listener at the outset of the piece, followed by a lyrical and expressive ballade. A brief transition culminates in a musical statement that recalls the music of a British military brass band, which is then accompanied by the original thematic material bringing the piece to a definitive conclusion. Journey's End - By Steve Hodges (ASCAP)

Upon completion of an activity, an event, or other meaningful experiences, there is a time for reflection for what has been accomplished and what is to follow. This lyrical piece features a memorable melody that is presented by all sections of the band. These reflective presentations lead into a slightly faster minor section indicating the anticipation of plans for the future. The final presentation of the melody indicates a positive feeling of accomplishment and features a moving countermelody by the woodwinds leading to a quiet, contemplative ending. Choreography - By Robert Sheldon

Choreography was commissioned by the 2008 ATSSB All-State Band by the Association of Texas Small School Bands. Written in overture form, the piece draws its inspiration from dance movements found in contemporary stage, ballet and theatrical productions. The piece opens with fast-paced angular gestures accompanied by rapid rhythmical punctuations before yielding to a contrasting lyrical section with long, flowing lines and many opportunities for expressive playing. The infectious beat patterns and memorable melodic content combine to make this an excellent concert opener. (5:33) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Climb the Mountains Tall - By Vince Gassi

Inspired by "The Dream," a poem by Darren Clayton, this work reflects the spirit of adventure necessary to journey to new places and new experiences. After a bold introduction, the flutes, oboe, and bells present a heroic melody with supporting roles provided by the baritone and snare drum. The full band then joins in and expands on the theme, energy building all the while. We journey briefly through a minor key and a slower, more contemplative section. With a transition back to the main theme, and a change of key, we boldly approach the exciting conclusion of our travels. This title is available in SmartMusic.

Vivaldi Concertante - Music by Antonio Vivaldi / arr. John Cacavas

Originally scored for two horns, strings and cembalo, this piece by Baroque favorite Antonio Vivaldi has been defitly adapted for concert band by noted composer and arranger, John Cacavas. By changing the horn parts to cornet and skillfully dividing the melodic structures between the brass and woodwinds (for example, many of the repeated 16thnote passages in the flutes and clarinets have been dovetailed, resulting in a smoother performance that captures the feel of the original string parts), Mr. Cacavas has made this work highly accessible to today's concert bands. A wonderful way to bring the bright, clear sounds of the Baroque period to your concert hall!

Echoes of Christmas - By Dave Black

Echoes of Christmas combines two Christmas favorites, "While by My Sheep" (Or "The Echo Carol") and "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen." "The Echo Carol," so named because it is written in a call and response format, is presented here with initial statement by the brass which are then immediately echoed by the woodwinds. "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" features a canonic treatment of this holiday favorite, first in the flutes and clarinets and then the entire ensemble. Your audience will be echoing these Christmas carols long after your next holiday concert is over!

Night - By Craig Andrew Fitzpatrick

"Night" is the result of a collaborative project between the composer and the 6th grade beginning band directed by his wife in Morton, Illinois. The students in her band class each write an eight-measure melody as a composition project which is part of the beginning band curriculum. These melodies each start and end on concert B-flat and use only the notes the students have learned on their instruments. The class voted on the best melody, and the winner was "Majestic Night, Oh Winter Night" by Sarah Gunter. The students then observed how this melody was developed by the composer into a concert band piece that they would perform later that year. Compositional terms such as repetition, fragmentation, and augmentation could then be taught to the 6th graders in a new piece for young band that was written just for them.
