The beautiful melody, charismatically harmonized, musically depicts that undying love and provides a meaningful opportunity to teach expressive and lyrical performance. Inspired by the majestic Alaskan landscape, Glacier Bay provides plenty of opportunities for dynamic and expressive playing by the young musicians. Following a brief introduction, the main theme is presented first by the trumpets and then by the low brass and trumpets in a lively and flowing manner. The active syncopated accompaniment patterns in the low brass and woodwinds provide an effective contrast to the melody. The B section of the piece moves smoothly into a stately, alla breve tempo with a clarinet choir making the first presentation of the melody. Following a very peaceful conclusion to the B section, an abbreviated restatement of the A section melody leads to the dynamic ending.

This exciting new piece from Steve Hodges begins with a chorale-type introduction that leads to a dynamic opening statement by the low brass. The main theme is legato to contrast with the busy percussion section. A secondary theme, introduced by the woodwinds, is followed by the return of the introduction with development. The second theme is then repeated by the woodwinds in a light, jazzy style. This leads to a powerful conclusion where the percussion section drives the full ensemble to a rousing finish.

While the original piano version of PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION remained unpublished at the time of Mussorgsky's death, the work was orchestrated by his friend Rimsky-Korsakov and published in 1886, although it remained largely obscure until Maurice Ravel's (based on the Rimsky-Korsakov) brilliant orchestration in the 1920s pushed the work into its current established and popular place in the repertoire. This present orchestration for band by Carl Simpson (edited by Alfred Reed) is entirely new and primarily based on the autograph manuscript.

"Harrison's Dream" is a musical depiction of the forty-year effort by John Harrison during the first half of the 18th century to develop a chronometer capable of providing exact time on the high seas. His obsession was a result of the passing of the Longitude Act following the accidental destruction of the Association, the flagship of the British Royal Navy, along with three sister ships in 1707 on rocks off the Scilly Islands. This highly rhythmic and technical composition was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band, Col. Lowell Graham, Commander/Conductor, and has been awarded the 2002 ABA/Ostwald Award for Original Composition. Graham is Associate Conductor of England's Black Dyke Brass Band. Recorded by the United States Air Force Band and the North Texas Wind Ensemble (Klavier).
