Abide With Me - William Henry Monk

The lyrics to Abide With Me were written as a poem in 1847 by Scottish Anglican Henry Francis Lyte. Lyte wrote the poem and set it to William Henry Monk's hymn tune ‘Eventide' as he lay dying from tuberculosis. The poem has been set with other melodies through-out its existence but it is the original pairing with Monk's tune that remains it's most popular and loved setting. In addition to regular use in memorial services, state occasions and festivals of remembrance, the hymn has made appearances in countless film and television programmes and is still sung regularly at the start of important sports events. Here a setting by renowned Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, arranged for wind band by Prof. Peter Graham, ensures this popular hymn tune will remain an audience favourite for years to come.

New World Sketches - Dan Price

New World Sketches is a descriptive journey through the landscapes and images of America in the early part of the 20th century. The images and caricatures chosen epitomize all that is the ‘New World', and the musical language draws upon influences of sound and technique that American composers have introduced into the musical vocabulary.SidewalkThe work opens with a busy street scene of 1930's New York, and the hustle and bustle of the city can be heard through percussive scoring of car hooters, trams and pedestrians going about their business, featuring elements of George Gershwin's American In Paris and Rhapsody in Blue. There is the sound of a Broadway show, a glimpse of a ‘Tom and Jerry' cartoon and the smokey sounds of Harlem. The Deep SouthAs the subtitle suggests, the second movement of New World Sketches evokes images of the 1890's Deep South beginning with a simple spiritual. Played first on unaccompanied solo euphonium the melody is then joined by bass trombone, depicting a slave "work song". An increase in tempo and a resounding tubular bell announces the arrival of a steam locomotive complete with "Love Chime" whistle.RodeoThe final movement steers away from the jazz influences synonymous in America's musical history and turns towards the music of Aaron Copland for inspiration. The opening unison tune, played on piccolo, flutes, oboe, bassoon, tenor sax, trumpet and trombone accompanied by extensive poly-chords, creates a big-country sound while the fast pseudo-Irish Jig provides the energy and flair of a rodeo.New World Sketches is conceived as a single work however each movement works independently if so desired.

Prelude and Fanfare - "Air" - Dan Price

Prelude and Fanfare takes its inspiration from a piece of NASA video footage, where a camera is attached to a piece of debris and jettisoned into space from the space shuttle.Initially, the camera captures images of the shuttle flying off into the distance and out of sight and images of Earth from outer space, as the debris floats around. The Earth's magnetic field takes hold of the debris and it re-enters the atmosphere, gathering speed and plummeting towards the Earth all the while capturing video images of its journey. The work is a musical reflection of this journey, starting with a ‘weightless' lontano section. At figure A the trombones imitate the magnetic pull of the earth and bring the seemingly abstract musical sounds into a coherent direction.Figure C is a musical representation of the entry into the earth's atmosphere, and the brisk tempo and rhythmic quality of the main theme should convey images of accelerated speed and excitement which eventually climaxes to the inevitable final "thud" of both the musical and documented journey. This musical study explores the use of minimalist techniques and ideas within the confines of the brass band idiom. The overall structure of the piece is based on the shape of a crescendo, starting at the softest level the ensemble is capable of, finishing at the greatest. Within this structure smaller crescendo sections determine the different segments of the overall work.

    Purcell Variants - Peter Meechan

Purcell Variants was originally composed for the Black Dyke Band, and is dedicated to their musical director, Nicholas Childs. It was first performed by the Black Dyke Band on 4th September 2004 at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester and has now been transcribed for wind band by the composer.Purcell Variants is based on Purcell's Queen Mary's Funeral Music, which consists of four canzonas (for brass), two elegies and an anthem. The first movement begins by sounding some of Purcell's original music in the trombones and horns, underpinned by a timpani roll with the woodwind articulating the beginnings and endings of the phrases. This leads into a cadenza for trumpet and alto saxophone before the movement heads in different directions, leading us to its mysterious end, where the original music is sounded this time in the 'stabs' of the clarinets and alto saxophone.Originally composed for the funeral of Queen Mary in 1695, Purcell's original funeral music was used later that same year for Purcell's own funeral - he died aged only 34. The second movement is an elegy, inspired by this story. After an introduction (a disjointed last post), the main melody of the movement is introduced by the solo euphonium, with other solo roles for flute, oboe and alto saxophone. This is then taken over by the trumpets who lead us into the middle section of the movement. This is a quasi funeral march, inspired by the image of Purcell's coffin being taken to its final resting point. The main melody returns in the flute, oboe and alto saxophone, this time more elaborated. The movement ends with a snare drum fading away - perhaps a metaphor. The Finale is a fast and furious movement combining thematic material from the two previous movements with new rhythmical ideas. This takes us through to the final passage - the triumphant return of Purcell's original theme.
