Dutch Masters Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan

For this exciting work Johan de Meij took his inspiration from Rembrandt's The Night Watch, Vermeer's Love Letter and Steen's Prinsjesdag. In the first movement the solo trombone keeps watch at night, whilst in the second movement lyrical lute music accompanies Vermeer's Love Letter. The third movement takes place in a tavern, where the drinking, singing and (increasingly inarticulate) music take place. An epilogue from the watchful trombone brings the piece to a peaceful end. This work by Johan de Meij was the set-piece for 2nd division concert bands at the 16th WMC in Kerkrade 2009. Duration: 21.00

The Red Tower - Johan de Meij

The 2nd movement of The Venetian Collection refers to a painting by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was commissioned by the Banda Civica di Soncino [Italy]. One of the main towers of the ancient walls that surround themedieval town of Soncino, La rocca sforzesca, has a significant resemblance with the tower on De Chirico's painting. De Meij has constructed an exciting and warm-blooded work, based on a simple four-note motif, with lyric solopassages for bassoon, bass clarinet and soprano saxophone in the middle section. In November of 2000, THE RED TOWER was awarded 1st Prize in the International Composition Competition of OMAN. (Duration 8:30)

Sinfonietta no. 1 - Johan de Meij

It also served as the test piece for the Swiss National Championships 2011 in Montreux, Switzerland. In 2012, Johan de Meij created this version for wind orchestra.Unlike most of Johan de Meij's compositions, Sinfonietta No. 1 is an abstract, non-programmatic work. It consists of three movements, in which the thematic material of the opening measures - an upward fifth jump - returns in various shapes and forms throughout the piece. The slow middle section features solo passages by cello, English horn and bassoon, all starting with thesame fifth jump. The final movement presents an Elgar-like march theme, interspersed with quotes from the second movement, and ending with the opening theme of movement I.
