Virginia Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes. The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future. 0:09:10

    Ambush - By Dakota Pederson

Ambush by Dakota Pederson is a work that describes the fight of war and recounts a flanking ambush set out by soldiers as they close in on a victory. A fiery chord opens the work and is followed by a relentless melody, which is expressed through precise articulation. The work challenges performers to focus on articulation and expression, while giving the percussion section a driving rhythm to maintain the energy. Strong harmonies in the brass and bold melodies throughout make this piece a fierce statement of war and victory. (4:12)

Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 - Music by Paul O'Neill and Robert Kinkel / arr. Bob Phillips and George Megaw

As seen in the mind-boggling Trans-Siberian Orchestra stage show! This thought-provoking medley of Christmas tunes describes a lone performer playing Christmas carols in the midst of the Bosnian war. The piece reflects the power, drama, and hope of a single musician in the midst of war, reflecting on the power of music to bring hope. The rock rhythm section contributes to an intense and very hip musical experience. Perhaps this can inspire a field trip to see the band live with lights and effects. (3:15)
