Virginia Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes. The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future. 0:09:10

Keep the Faith - Score and Parts - Duncan Stubbs

Program NotesKeep the Faith originally started as a personal tribute to my late mother. Not long after writing the opening ideas I was approached to write music to accompany a rendition of the poem "We Will Keep the Faith" by Moina Michael for performance as part of the 100th Anniversary of the start og World War I. The appropriateness of the music already written and the sentiment behind both concepts was a coincidence too good to overlook. Rarely sentimental and always practical I feel sure my mum would be delighted that the music she originally inspired was being used to portray a much wider universal message of remembrance.Whether performed with or without the poem a fully sustained sound should always be aimed for. The 'bugle' call at bar 20 and again at bar 76 should reflect a distant call across the trenches, the cornet remaining prominent over the upper woodwind. The tempo indication is a guide only and allowance must be made for the acoustic in which the piece is performed. The music must always flow, but appropriate rubato should be freely used together with appropriate tenuto in the middle of phrases.- Duncan Stubbs

March - Rosehill - Albert Jakeway

March - Rosehill was composed by the conductor of the Rosehill band, a one Colonel Albert Jakeway and was named after the premises that were occupied by the Salvation Army's Assurance Society when they were evacuated during the World War 2. It is a majestic march that will find good use in a performance or marching band.

    Cyrano - Otto M. Schwarz

What are the true qualities of a person? Outward beauty or inner values? Or perhaps a balance of the two? This question has probably been posed by everyone at some time or another, and the answer is as challenging as it is subjective. This is also the theme of this work. The poet and soldier Cyrano de Bergerac is known for his big nose and his great intellect. The 17th century novelist harbours feelings for the beautiful Roxane but is sure that this love will never be reciprocated. Roxane herself falls in love with the cadet Christian de Neuvillette, who is certainly handsome but could be described as stupid. Cyrano de Bergerac writes love poems on behalf of Christian to win Roxane's heart. And then there is the Count Guiche, who is married but also wants to make her is mistress.Christian and Roxane eventually marry and the furious Count Guiche sends Christian and Cyrano, who serve together in the Captains of Gascony regiment, to the front and, some months later, on a suicide mission.Shortly before the battle, Roxane confesses to her husband that she no longer loves him so much for his beauty as for his inner values. Christian is dismayed and begs Cyrano to tell Roxane the truth, but he can't bring himself to do so.Christian de Neuvillette dies in battle and Cyrano de Bergerac remains silent about the true provenance of the letters.Only much later does the truth come to light: scarred by the war, Cyrano visits Roxane in the convent where she has been living since Christian's death and confesses his love for her. He ultimately dies in Roxane's arms.

    Sinfonisches Prludium - Anton Bruckner

The Symphonic Prelude in C minor is an orchestral composition from the circle of the Austrian composer Anton Bruckner. The unearthing of this work, discovered shortly after World War II, has created confusion, leading to a second, reduced version being attributed to Gustav Mahler, a theory which still holds sway in musical circles today, although there is a high probability that the original composition is indeed by Bruckner himself. Rudolf Krzyzanowski (1895-1911), a pupil of Bruckner, transcribed the score in 1876. The 43-page manuscript bears the inscription Rudolf Krzyzanowski cop. 1876 on the first page; while on the last page is written in blue pencil: By Anton Bruckner.Thomas Doss used a facsimile of this autograph copy as the basic of his instrumentation of the prelude for symphonic wind orchestra.

    Adagio - Tomaso Albinoni

The Adagio is based on a manuscript that was discovered in the Dresden State Library after the Second World War by Remo Giazotto, a Milanese musicologist who was working on Albinoni's biography at the time. Only the bass line and six bars of melody were found and they probably belonged to the slow movement of a Trio Sonata. In 1945 Giazotti reconstructed the now famous Adagio which has made Albinoni known to a worldwide audience.
