Otto M. Schwarz was asked by a friend to compose a chorale for the funeral of his child. Lux Aeterna (The Eternal Light) is actually part of the requiem mass, but in this composition, there is no reference to the original Latin text. People who recount near-death experiences often report a bright light. The music moves back and forth between passages that are sad, optimistic, and imploring in nature, posing questions that cannot be answered. The end of the piece comes, however, with a conciliatory major chord that reflects the calm and warmth of this light that promises redemption.Duration: 3.45

The picturesque town of Mandalen lies amid snow-covered mountains and scenic fjords on the west coast of Norway. Mndalen Landscapes was commissioned by and written for Mndalen Skule og Ungdomskorps (Mandalen School and Youth Band) for a major concert in November 2003 at the instigation of its conductor, John Hudson, a long-time friend of composer Philip Sparke. Sparke set out to capture the beauty of the area in music and the piece opens with an evocation of the crisp, clear air of a Norwegian morning. After this introduction, the main theme is stated on clarinets and saxophones. A central bridge section takes the listener through several moods until the brass reintroduce the main theme under a woodwind descant. Material from the introduction brings the work to a peaceful close.Duration: 6:00

Felicien Doyen, the President of the Tornacum Royal Choir Circle of Tournai (Belgium) and a close friend of the composer commissioned this Mass. Missa Tornacum was originally composed for mixed choir and organ, gave a memorable performance of the piece in the Chartres Cathedral in France.Although it does not include the Credo, the work is composed according to the traditional structure of a Mass in five parts : Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and Ite missa est. En the first two parts, a dialogue is created between the choir and the band. It is followed by the Sanctus cycle ("Sanctus" - "Hosanna" - "Benedictus"), which is remarkable for the contrasts between the tone colours characterising each of its three parts. The fourth part, Agnus Dei, takes on a tone of serene intimacy. A free counterpoint draws this section to a close by fading into an almost imperceptible quietness. Ite missa est begins with a series of imitations, which develop into a majestic and cheerful passage marking the end of the Mass. Choir parts are available separately.Duration: 17:00

The Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) was self-educated to a large extent but went on to become one of the ?Mighty Five? which also included Balakirev, Cui, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov. Today he is considered the innovator of Russian music par excellence. He composed Pictures at an Exhibition in 1874, inspired by ten pictures produced by his then recently deceased friend, the Russian architect and artist Victor Hartmann. The French composer Maurice Ravel made an orchestration of Mussorgsky?s composition in 1922 which is now more well-known and more performed than the original piano suite. For his transcription of Pictures at an Exhibition, Tohru Takahashimade use of the original piano composition by Mussorgsky. The Great Gate of Kiev, issued here separately, is probably the best known melody from this classical masterpiece.

Band director and radio presenter Yutaka Nishida hails from Tokyo and has long been a friend of composer Philip Sparke. As well as conducting bands and teaching, he also presents a weekly two-hour music program, focusing on both brass and concertbands, on the Japanese national radio station, Digital Radio Musicbird.The program is called The Bandwagon and the radio station commissioned Philip Sparke to write a march which could be used as a theme tune for the program. It was written by Bob Marley himself, but he had it attributed to a man called Vincent Ford, a friend of his - who could keep running his soup kitchen in Trenchtown with the royalties. No Woman, No Cry is still a classic within pop music. This arrangement for a variable four-part line-up was written by Peter Kleine Schaars, who has produced many more successful arrangements of popular hits.
