    Intermezzo - Holst

Gustav Holst's "First Suite in Eb For Military Band" is universally considered a band masterwork. This "Build-A-Band" edition places it within reach of those bands with severely limited or awkward instrumentation, making it the perfect selection for your small band with good players to sound great! This fast middle movement from the suite teaches young musicians to articulate contrasting staccato and legato passages. Optional parts for guitar, piano, bass and percussion can fill some missing holes in the band. (Also available in the Build-A-Band series: the first and third movements of this suite.)

In the Bleak Midwinter - By Gustav Holst / arr. Jack Bullock

The beautifully haunting sounds of this Holst classic appear first in the lower brass to launch this highly atmospheric scoring for concert band. Shifting tonalities and sonorities include a chorale section stating the melodic material with safe and traditional treatment. Technical demands are minimal, and even though the work is positioned for a young ensemble, it should not be overlooked by advancing groups in search of a quality arrangement. Hampshire March - By Gustav Holst / arr. Douglas E. Wagner

Based on the original opening of the original introduction for Second Suite in F for Military Band, Holst replaced this section with the now-familiar morris dance tune, "Glory Shears." The 38-measure passage (crossed out in the autograph score) draws upon the English folk song, "Young Reilly," and presents an alluring work in itself for younger players. Serious band literature for your developing band! (2:15) This title is available in SmartMusic.

I Vow to Thee, My Country - Score and Parts - Gustav Holst

Program NotesGustav Holst's orchestral suite The Planets is perhaps his best known and most popular composition. The them in the central section of the movement Jupiter was adapted by the composer himself to fit the words of the song and has subsequently found its way into use as a hymn tune under the title Thaxted (named after the Essex town where the composer lived).Ray Steadman-Allen's arrangement of the tune for brass band was published by The Salvation Army in 1998. That arrangement has now been transcribed for wind band by Brian Bowen. It can be effectively used as a stand-alone concert item or as a song accompaniment for either choir or audience.
