    Choreography - By Robert Sheldon

Choreography was commissioned by the 2008 ATSSB All-State Band by the Association of Texas Small School Bands. Written in overture form, the piece draws its inspiration from dance movements found in contemporary stage, ballet and theatrical productions. The piece opens with fast-paced angular gestures accompanied by rapid rhythmical punctuations before yielding to a contrasting lyrical section with long, flowing lines and many opportunities for expressive playing. The infectious beat patterns and memorable melodic content combine to make this an excellent concert opener. (5:33) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Time to Shine - Score and Parts - Andrew Mackereth

Program NotesThis piece sets out to capture the spirit and fun of a theatrical stage-dance routine. Many will be familiar with the children's song Jesus Bids Us Shine on which it is based. The piece is very light-hearted in character, and would easily lend itself to the addition of some imaginative choreography that could prove extremely entertaining and amusing on the right occasion! In its original brass band form, the piece was written for The Salvation Army's Melbourne Staff Band when they toured the UK in 2001. It was used to great effect by the band on that trip.

    Soft-shoe Shuffle - Philip Sparke

Dating from the first decades of the 20th century and originating in vaudeville and the music hall, the soft-shoe shuffle was danced by tap dancers, wearing soft-shoes instead of their normal tap shoes. In this usually comic dance, the shoes were rubbed on the surface of the stage producing a characteristic 'swish'. Soft-shoe Shuffle can be made into a percussion feature by bringing the sandpaper blocks to the front of the stage - with added choreography, if required! A wonderful piece of musical humour for your concerts.

Call of the Valley - Jacob de Haan

The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off_x005F_x001E_stage and a little march for brass and _x005F_x001D_flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.

Excerpts from The Rite of Spring - Igor Stravinsky

The premier performance of The Rite of Spring in 1913 is the stuff of legend. There was disagreement among the people who attendedas to whether it was the music or the choreography that caused the near-riot in the audience. Sincethen The Rite has been performed regularly and is considered to be one of the most influential works of the 20th century, laying the basis for modern jazz, film music and even heavy metal. It's all here: the driving rhythms, haunting Russian folk melodies, brilliant scoring, crunching harmonies and the epic drama! The intention with this arrangement for band was to stay as true as possible to the original and choose the sections that would work wellin this context. Sure to become a valued and important addition to the wind band repertoire! Dur: 6:30

Parade of the Clockwork Soldiers - Philip Sparke

This piece was inspired by the composer watching his young son, Benny, playing 'soldiers' with his collection of teddy bears - how appropriate! But it made him think of the many character pieces which take the form of a 'toy march', the most notable examples being by Haydn, Tchaikovsky and Leon Jessel. Parade of the Clockwork Soldiers is in the form of a 'patrol' (starting and ending quietly with a louder middle) and aims to represent a band marching past the listener. In fact, where the hall layout permits it, it could be possible to add a little choreography to the piece, starting and ending with only a few instruments on stage.

    Galop Final - Léo Delibes

With supersize spiral bound A3 score. In the middle of the 19th century, European ballet was associated largely with stories of tragedy and gloom. In contrast, the ballet Copplia, premiered in 1870 with music by Lo Delibes and choreography by Arthur Saint-Lon, tells the happily-ever-after story of the toymaker Dr. Copplius, his life-sized doll, and two young lovers.
