We wish you a Merry Christmas (Orchestra) English Trad. arr. Kenneth Downie

This delightful arrangement of We wish you a Merry Christmas comes from the pen of Scottish composer and arranger Kenneth Downie. He writes: 'The origins of this jolly carol lie in the West Country of England, which has been my home for the last 12 years. Carollers singing this song make the wish that their hearers will have a merry Christmas and a happy new year, but then go on to request some 'figgy pudding' - and if they don't receive the aforementioned pudding, they threaten to keep on singing indefinitely. Having experienced at first hand the dubious quality of some carol singers, this threat should be taken seriously! Quite obviously, a carol of this profound nature calls for a matching musical approach in performance. It should be played with a smile, and hopefully leave a smile on the face of the listeners.' Excursion (Brass Band) Christopher Cook

Excursion was the winner of the 2022 BrookWright International Brass Band Composition Competition. The composer Christopher Cook writes: 'In this short and effervescent study for brass band, I wanted to take the listener and players on a journey which moves from a soundworld of bristling, bubbling energy to a triumphant fanfare and finally a moment of repose. The initial fast flurry of notes, highlighted and emphasised by precise elements of percussion, informs the motivic development of the rest of the piece and eventually forms the basis for the textural backdrop to the filmic sounding melody heard around halfway through the piece. The unexpected final passage is intended to be a nod to works for brass band by Paul Patterson and Harrison Birtwistle.' Da Vincian Visions

This piece is a tribute to the Da Vincian model of creativity. Using a single theme, Larry Clark uses da Vinci's approach to view this theme from every angle. You'll find everything from African style to jigs in this incredibly complex piece; well worth the effort for your band. This piece cannot be used with the 1999 Belwin-Mills edition.

Three Revelations from Lotus Sutra: Movement I - Awakening - By Alfred Reed

Three Revelations from the Lotus Sutra is an attempt to realize in music three different states of man's soul in his quest for ultimate perfection. The Lotus Sutra is the teaching of human respect, self-perfection and world peace - in a word, humanism, leading mankind from division to unity, from discord to harmony, from conflict to peace.I. The first movement, Awakening, (To Awaken to the Light of the Universe) portrays the vastness and richness of the experience of the human mind on expanding its field of view from the narrow confines of daily life to the contemplation of, and merging with, the entire universe.II. Contemplation (To Contemplate the Depths of the Soul) represents a turning-away of the mind from the "outer" to the "inner" universe -- the attempt to fathom the limitless possibilities of the human consciousness in its quest for identity, to answer the eternal questions beginning with the word "Why?"III. Rejoicing (To Rejoice in the Beauty of Peace) depicts the realization that, while on earth, peace is not merely the absence of war, destruction, pain and suffering, but a thing of beauty in and of itself, and an occasion for heartfelt rejoicing on the part of all men everywhere, who share the same eternal quest as true brothers. This suite was commissioned by, and is reverently dedicated to, Rissho Kosei-kai, on the occasion of the 77th birthday of its founder and president, the Reverent Nikkyo Niwano.Program notes extracted from the Wind Repertory Project.

Through the Vulcan's Eye - By Robert W. Smith

High atop a red mountain overlooking the magnificent city of Birmingham, Alabama, stands an iron sentinel---a monument of Vulcan that keeps watch over the "City of Steel." Through the Vulcan's Eye is comprised of four melodies, each aurally describing a view from the top of the mountain and inspired by the composer's childhood experiences in Alabama's largest metropolis. Broad brush strokes of sound blanket the work, enhanced by brilliant solo passages and total involvement from the percussion. A grand work on a grand scale! (7:09)

    Expansions - By Hale Smith

The title of this work was suggested by the spreading tone-clusters of the beginning. It also refers to the fact that rhythms, intervals, dynamics, and instrumentation are all subjected to various procedures of expansion and contraction. The entire piece is developed from the material presented in the first ten measures. From a non-technical point of view, the title seems also appropriate since the piece was conceived, not as an exercise in technique, but as a musical statement capable of involving the listener's emotions and imagination purely as a work of art.

Mills on the Merrimack - By Robert Sheldon

"Mills on the Merrimack" presents a musical portrait of Lowell, MA and its mill town traditions. Opening with a view of the river on a misty morning, the music flows with the river into the city of Lowell where industry and the Irish heritage of its settlers is represented. These two main musical themes are then brought together in a way that depicts the bond between the city and its founding citizens. (3:45) This title available in SmartMusic.
