Poet and Peasant Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Suppe, Franz Von - Takahashi, Tohru

Preludes and overtures were often written to set the mood of Viennese folk plays and therefore might be used for more than one production. Such was the case for Poet and Peasant, which introduced a comedy of the that name in 1846. The piece had already been heard as the overture to the play Lots of money, short of sleep and may also have prefaced two other plays. This overture did not belong to an opera until several years after its 1845 composition date. The themes from this overture are among the most often quoted material for comic effects for stage productions and animated cartoons. Probably, they represent, in sound, an era of nostalgia from the old-time park band concerts and are familiar to audiences of all age groups. This composition deserves to be heard in its original context as a serious, but highly entertaining, selection.Duration: 10:15

Russian Easter Overture Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Rimsky-Korsakov composed his three greatest orchestral works over a short period: he completed Capriccio Espagnol in 1887, and he composed Russian Easter Overture in 1888, simultaneously with the symphonic suite Scheherazade. Russian Easter Overture is a magnificent overture in a single movement that was dedicated to the composers Borodin and Moussorgsky. Several hymns of the Russian Orthodox Church create a characteristic atmosphere. Arranger Tohru Takahashi has made the sound even more colourful by using several mallet percussion instruments. 0:16:00

Westport Overture - Music by David Campo

Westport Overture is the ideal piece for the maturing high school band. Its strong opening polychordal statement sets the foundation for an exciting overture that sounds much more difficult than it is. Rich, complex harmonies lend it a sophisticated tone, while its rhythmic simplicity puts it well within the range of most young high school bands. The middle section is sensitive and lyrical, yet has no extreme range considerations or overly exposed parts. The return of the opening fanfare allows for a strong finish, making Westport Overture a natural contest or concert selection for the developing band.

1812 Overture, Themes from - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Here is an excellent adaptation for younger bands of this famous overture by Tchaikovsky. The arrangement opens with the slow chorale-like theme which is found at the beginning of the original overture. From there, the piece builds to the familiar dymanic fast theme and powerful conclusion.

    Dynamic Overture - Franco Cesarini

This piece is written in the form of an overture (A-B-A). The beginning features a prominent, dynamic theme, which determines the character of the whole piece. This theme is repeated in every part of the composition; in the slow middle movement it appears in lyrical phrases, supported by broad harmonies, which feature in an unexpected manner. Dynamic Overture ends with an adapted repeat of the first movement, finishing in a flashing coda.

    Festive Overture - Dimitri Shostakovich

Festive Overture was composed in 1954 to commemorate the 37th birthday of the October Revolution of 1917. With this overture Shostakovich shows his brighter side, in contrast to his melancholy 10th symphony written in the previous year. The premiere of this piece took place on November 6, 1954 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Shostakovich makes great use of different themes which he alternates and intermingles in a masterly way. This skilful transcription by Tohru Takahashi retains all the grandeur of the original.
