Orpheus in the Underworld (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Offenbach, Jacques - Van der Beek, Wil

Jacques Offenbach was born in 1819 in Cologne, Germany, but as a child he moved to Paris where he received a thorough musical education. In his operetta Orpheus in the Underworld, Offenbach parodies the famous Greek legend of Orpheus and Euridice. Indirectly, however, he criticises the complacency of many of his contemporaries. The overture was not written entirely by Offenbach, Carl Binder added various pieces to it for a Viennese production of this operetta in 1860 and since then, these pieces have remained part of the composition. This appealing transcription includes the famous Can Can which is sure to get your audience high kicking in the aisles!Duration: 9:15

Kinesis (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sweeney, Michael

Drawing its title from the Greek word for motion, this marvellously paced work from Michael Sweeney explores various forms of motion within the concert band setting. The fanfare-like opening uses interplay between the brass, percussion and woodwinds and is followed by a driving main theme. The slow motion middle section uses a striking harmonic scheme stated first by the woodwinds and some unusual orchestration devices, before returning to an expanded version of the main theme and dramatic ending. This rewarding and fresh-sounding composition will leave a lasting impression on players and listeners alike.Duration: 5:50

Utopia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself, after the Greek language, meaning "Nowhereland" and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However, Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brass section remind of Wagner's music.Duration: 11:30

Aeolian Winds (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Edmunds, John F.

In Greek mythology Aeolus was called 'god of the winds.' Legend has it he was visited by Odysseus and his crew, and that he provided for a west wind to carry them home. The E-flat major scale is fully exploited in this skilfully composed and orchestrated melody, whose brief excursions into foreign tonal centres are clearly notated with accidentals rather than new key signatures. With grateful ranges and limited technical demands throughout, dramatic impact is achieved through a variety of dynamic levels and non-harmonic tones.Duration: 2.30

Artemis Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are "concertante" in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again. 0:04:00
