As he climbed even higher, the only sound was the rustle of branches and the gentle tolling of the church bell in the valley below. On reaching the peak, the full panorama of the Alps opened up. MUSINGS ON A PHRASE (Prestige Concert Band Extra Score) - Barry, Darrol
Extra Score. Musings opens with an unaccompanied oboe presenting the main theme which is a cipher o the name Paul Hindmarsh to whom this work is dedicated. Most of the ensuing music is based on this theme in one variant or another. whilst basically a set of variations, occasionally a motif will assume more importance in the following section, the main theme never being too far away. This music goes through many mood swings but finally the opening idea reveals itself agian and fades away on piccolo and glockenspiel. It is essentially rhapsodic in nature and derives much of it's melodic material from the harmonic implication of the 'Neapolitan Sixth' chord - that of the flatten supertonic, mostly found in minor key tonalities. Extra Score. Omaggio is a homage to Italy and all things Italian. A brief Burla of a fast-moving scherzo character pays tribute to Verdi. Barcarola is sterner stuff - a grim black gondola evokes the Venice of the Serenissima. The movement is an actual gondola song coupled with the jaunty fanfares of Monteverdi and Gabrieli's Sonata pian'e forte. The most substantial movement is the final Palio, an unashamedly programmatic evocation of the historic Sienese horse-race, ending with a Tuscan folk-song. Duration: 16-18 mins
