Europese Hymne: In 1972 koos de Raad van Europa het thema van 'Ode aan de vreugde' van Ludwig van Beethoven (uit de Negende Symphonie) als het Europese Volkslied. De tekst van het lied, 'Ode aan de vreugde' (An die Freude. Ode to Joy) is van de hand van Friedrich Schiller. Net alsSchiller vond Beethoven dat alle mensen gelijk waren (broeders). Ter gelegenheid van deze bijzondere verjaardag componeerde Dagmar Kildevann de vrolijke mars J'eu'ful. De titel is een woordspeling op de tekst van het Europese volkslied. Kildevann gebruikt als inleiding op het volkslied het bekende motief uit Beethoven's Vijfde Symphonie.

"Caribbean Summer", a three-movement piece, captures this very mood: Very early in the morning, a summer day begins with "Guadeloupe", a Caribbean waltz. In this the change from a triple meter to a duple meter counter rhythm is of prime importance. From it, the music draws a particular lilt.At noon there is a happy and lively hustle and bustle on the beach. Vendors ("The Coconut Vendor") sing and offer their sugar-peanuts ("Chou-Cou"). A guest spontaneously begins to drum his fingers on a table, a second one reaches for a calabash or a cowbell - a cha-cha-cha is born. Finally, in "Caribbean Nights" a joyful parade of happy people march down the streets. Based on this very feeling, a special dance developed chiefly in the Dominican Republic: a simple basic two-step pattern in even rhythm becomes a "Merengue" together with the right, so to speak contra rotating motion of the hips! This cheerful dance then marks the close of day in a happy way - and in the morning everything will begin over again...

The suite is constructed around a Norwegian folk tune. The melody is called "Dark Forebodings", and the words of the song revolve around thoughts and reflections on a future that can take unexpected, insecure, or perhaps dramatic and tragic turns.This is essentially a sad song with a beautiful melody. The folk tune itself is presented in the 2nd movement. In the 1st movement, the folk tune is joined with fleeting themes that indicate the unexpected; as if the music sometimesis confused as to which way to go. There are constant changes in atmosphere and feeling, from the harsh and dissonant, to the harmonious and melodic. The 3rd movement presents a more lively variant of thefolk tune, showing optimism andhappiness, even though the "halting" character of the rhythm underscores the unpredictable. The title "Reflections", therefore, refers to thoughts we can have about life. To the Conductor:The 2nd movement has an alternativeending which is may be used if the movement is played as an independent lyrical piece in a concert.It is advisable to begin first rehersal with the 2nd movement so that the main theme is known, before beginning on the 1st movement with itsmore semi-tonal parts. Intervals and intonation can provide much of the challenge in this movement.The 3rd movement can be more technically challenging, but there is considerable leeway in the tempo marking! It is important to maintain theenergy and intensity of the music through the whole movement.
