£110.00Waltz (from Suite Antique) (Flute Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts)
Suite Antique is a 1979 concertante work by John Rutter that is written for harpsichord, flute and string orchestra. Rutter composed the piece, in six movements, for a concert at which Bach's fifth Brandenburg concerto was to be performed, and so decided to write the piece for the same ensemble. This arrangement for Concert/Wind Band and Solo Flute adheres to the original presentation, but is expanded for a full band accompaniment to the solo flute. The harpsichord is optional, being cued elsewhere, but may be performed as in the original score by either harpsichord or an electronic keyboard with a similar setting. A jazz drumset is optionally included in the fourth (jazz waltz) movement, and other percussion discretely added in other movements. It is exciting to hear earlier musical forms brought into today's music appreciation, and this setting of a flute solo with band is especially refreshing for both soloist and band.

This work was composed as a commission by the Aikodai Meiden High School Symphonic Band, for the 50th anniversary of their annual concert; the title A Golden Jubilation is a reference to this. The close friendship between Hiroki Ito, the conductor of the band, and Satoshi Yagisawa resulted in this brilliant and exhilarating fanfare of approximately two minutes in length; the piece is ideal to use as a concert opener. The original composition was arranged for an extremely wide range of instruments and a band of 200 musicians, including a separate 'banda', harp and a variety of special instruments. This version has been rescored for standard band instrumentation by the composer himself. Duration: 2.20

Six miniatures based on animals from the Japanese 'Junishi'. Zodiac Dances was commissioned by the Izumiotsu City Band, Osaka, Japan to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Sparke had previously written the piece, Prelude to a Celebration for the band, and in composing a new piece for their 50th anniversary wanted to personalise it to reflect the band's history. He chose to write a set of six dance-miniatures based on the decades following the band's foundation and the equivalent signs from the Japanese 'Junishi'. During the piece, all aspects of true musicianship come to the surface. Martin Mailman (1932-2000) composed "Alarums for Band, Op. 27" in 1962 in Greenville, North Carolina. The word "alarum" means a "call to arms." The piece was originally titled "Overture for Band" and was later changed to "Alarums for Band" sometime between its completion in 1962 and publication in 1969 with John Barnes Chance, Mailman's colleague and friend, probably suggesting the change in title sometime during this period.
