Dance of the Whale was commissioned by the Spanish music foundation, Musica et Orbi, at the instigation of its president, Frank De Vuyst. It is part of a unique project which involved nine composers each writing a short movement, describing ananimal of the composers' choice, to form a suite called Bestiarium. A consortium of bands around the world helped to fund the project and the world premiere of the suite took place in March 2013 in Medell n, Colombia. Dance of the Whaleuses the tenor instruments of the band to describe a lazy and graceful dance by a blue whale and is dedicated to endangered species around the world.

Written in 1972, popularity for Grease rocketed again in 1978 with the smash motion picture starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The selection consists of Born To Hand Jive, We Go Together, Summer Nights and Greased Lighnin' and combine to form a stunning medley. This version makes up part of the Hal Leonard Discovery Plus Band series for developing bands. 'Mixed Bag' stands midway between a collection and a hotchpotch. It is a colourful compilation of four completely different pieces, each with its own specific character. The first part is called 'Tanguillo' : as its name suggests, this Spanish dance is related to the Tango. In the next part, 'Maybe next time ....' a repeated bass line (Passacaglia) can be heard, first solo, but thereafter gradually the other instruments join in. The third part forms a huge contrast did the former part have a Baroque atmosphere, 'Rock Hard' seems to have come directly from the Rock 'n Roll era, reminding us of stars such as Bill Haley and Elvis Presley. The finale is acheerful, inciting movement called 'Gypsy Dance'.

Originally composed for Children's Choir and Orchestra, the composer then revised it for orchestra, on which this arrangement for Concert/Wind Band has been adapted. The contemporary setting brings a special lift and expression of joy to this unique folksong setting.
