The opening measured of Clare Grundman's A Finnish Rhapsody are base on Oi kallis Suomenmaa (O Blessed Fatherland), an old South Bothnian melody beloved of the whole Finnish nation. The words of this song epitomize each Finn'snoblest duty, the readiness to sacrifice all in defense of his country's liberty. Next is an episode based on Kesilta (Summer Evening), one of the loveliest of Finnish folk songs, being as delightfully tranquil as the Finnishcountryside. Following this is a section based on the lively folk tune, Talon Tytt (The Country Lass), a mirthful love song about a peasant maid and her swain. The Mexican songwriter Maria Grever, wrote the melody in 1934 ("Cuando vuelva a tu lado") and it became a big hit for jazz-singer Diana Washington. Since that, it has been recognized as a jazz-standard and also featured in several movies. This arrangement was originally written for young, Norwegian singer Angelina Jordan. In this version, the level of difficulty and instrumentation are customized to fit our Young Band-series. Included in the set is parts for both string bass and vocals, but they are not compulsory to perform the piece. In this style, the accompaniment will have a slight swinging feel, while some of the contrasting elements has to be performed without swing(Even).

Tribute to a Maestro is an homage to Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 1764), one of the most important French Baroque composers. Rameau was a hugely significant composer, organist, harpsichordist and music teacher: he also published several authoritative books on music theory. Jan de Haan based this tribute on a theme from 'Les Sauvages' (The Savages), the fourth act of Rameau's ballet-opera, Les Indes Galantes (The Amorous Indies). The work begins with two variations, whereupon the striking theme can be heard. After a short intermezzo, four more variations follow, of which the last one is composed in Baroque style.

The special occasion that Philip Sparke was honoured to write this piece for was the 200th anniversary of the Stadtmusik Bad Sckingen. Since Bad Sckingen is known as the 'Trompeterstadt', or trumpeter city, Sparke's creative process was influenced by Joseph Victor Scheffel's poem, Der Trompeter von Sckingen (The Trumpeter from Sckingen), which is based on a true story. The overture starts with a majestic fanfare, followed by a lively molto vivace. It is joined by a brilliant trumpet call in honour of the city's famous resident.
