The Big Apple, Part I - Skyline - Johan de Meij

An ode to New York. The Big Apple is a musical representation of the spirit, the glamour and the unfriendliness of one of the most fascinating cities in the world. Listening to this symphony is as exciting as a visit to Manhattan. The listener is never allowed a moment's peace, even the tranquil slow passages are accompanied by an ostinato rumbling in the background. As in the City there is never a quiet moment. This edition contains only the first movement of this epic work.

Circus Band Music (Fellini) - Johan de Meij

Fellini takes the listener into the surrealistic and dreamy world of legendary Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini. The alto saxophone soloist - being the personification of a clown - and the off stage circus band add a unique theatrical element to the work.

Highlights from The Seville Suite - Bill Whelan

The success of Bill Whelan's Riverdance evolved from a concept for music and dance that he established earlier with The Seville Suite, his first major orchestral composition. The Seville Suite was commissioned for Ireland's National Day at the World Expo 1992 in Seville, Spain. Through the score, Whelan tells the story of legendary Irish war hero Red Hugh O'Donnell. At a mere 21 years of age, O'Donnell successfully led a rebellion against the English government in 1593. Johan de Meij's arrangement is a 13-minute adaptation featuring highlights from the original suite.

Dance of the Amazon - Anatoly K. Liadov

The Russian composer Anatoli Liadow was one of Rimski-Korsakov's talented students and was also a respected conductor. Liadow's compositions are relatively few, as he did not complete many of his works. One of the pieces he did complete was called Dance of the Amazon, which was written for the dancer Ida Rubinstein. Johan de Meij's arrangement makes this charming work, based on two Greek folk melodies, accessible to concert bands for the first time ever!

Star Wars Saga (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

John Williams (February 8, 1932) has composed some of the most popular, recognisable and critically acclaimed film scores in cinema history. Williams has won 25 Grammy Awards, five Academy Awards, seven British Academy Film Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards. With 53 Academy Award nominations, he is the second most-nominated individual, after Walt Disney. His compositions are considered the epitome of film music, and he is considered among the greatest composers in the history of cinema. His work has influenced many other composers of film, popular, and contemporary classical music. In 2005, the American Film Institute selected Williams's score to 1977's Star Wars as the greatest film score of all time. In this newly revised arrangement from 1986, arranger Johan de Meij has used themes from Star Wars: A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.

Triptychon (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan

Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865 - 1931) painted his famous Aino Triptych in 1891, with his own wife Mary as the model. It is inspired by the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic and depicts the story on three panels: The left one is about the first encounter of Vainamoinen and Aino in the forest. The right one depicts mournful Aino weeping on the shore and listening to the call of the mermaids of Vellamo who are playing in the water. The central panel depicts fishing Vainamoinen having thrown away a small fish, which turns out to be Aino, who laughs at him and vanishes forever.Duration: 10.30

Cats (Songs from the musical) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lloyd Webber, Andrew - De Meij, Johan

The musical Cats, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber is based on the 1939 poetry collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. It became Lloyd Webber's third great success, after the musicals Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. He began setting Eliot's poems to music in 1977, and the compositions were first presented as a song cycle in 1980. Producer Cameron Mackintosh then recruited director Trevor Nunn and choreographer Gillian Lynne to turn the songs into a complete musical. Cats became one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. It received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981, where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances. The following year, Cats opened at New York's Winter Garden Theatre, its home for the next 18 years, garnering seven 1983 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show returned to Broadway in 2016, where it had a successful pre-tour run at the Neil Simon Theatre. Cats has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 16 languages, and seen by more than 73 million people worldwide. Lloyd Webber's magnificent musical score includes the poignant hit song Memory, which has been recorded by over 150 artists, from Barbra Streisand to Liberace to Barry Manilow. It took 7,486 chandelier crashes for Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera to take over from Cats as the longest-running show in Broadway history in January 2006.Duration: 8.15
