Le Calife de Bagdad (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Boieldieu, Francois-Adrien - Van der Beek, Wil
Francois-Adrien Boieldieu (1775-1834) is considered as the one of the most important representatives of the French opera-comique. His style is characterised by natural, unembellished melody lines, straight forward harmonies with refined orchestration. In 1800, Boieldieu achieved a major triumph with Le Calife de Bagdad. The opening is a true classic of this genre.Duration: 9:00

Orpheus in the Underworld (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Offenbach, Jacques - Van der Beek, Wil
Jacques Offenbach was born in 1819 in Cologne, Germany, but as a child he moved to Paris where he received a thorough musical education. In his operetta Orpheus in the Underworld, Offenbach parodies the famous Greek legend of Orpheus and Euridice. Indirectly, however, he criticises the complacency of many of his contemporaries. The overture was not written entirely by Offenbach, Carl Binder added various pieces to it for a Viennese production of this operetta in 1860 and since then, these pieces have remained part of the composition. This appealing transcription includes the famous Can Can which is sure to get your audience high kicking in the aisles!Duration: 9:15

Bahn Frei (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Strauss, Eduard - Van der Beek, Wil
Eduard Strauss, the third son of Johann Strauss the Elder, was born on March 15, 1835, in Vienna. Originally, Eduard looked for employment in the diplomatic service, but he also studied music theory. He became a harpist in the Strauss orchestra in 1855. In 1862, he joined his two famous brothers Johann Jr. and Josef as a conductor of the family orchestra. Like that of his two brothers, his musical output was prolific: he wrote over 320 separate dances and marches. Apart from the exuberant Bahn Frei (Track Clear), which he wrote in 1869, and a handful of other fast polkas (he excelled in this particular dance form), his music is not as well known as that of his brothers.Duration: 3:00

Nocturne (Clarinet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Tchaikovsky, Peter Ilyich - Van der Beek, Wil
Tchaikovsky is best known for his purely instrumental compositions. However, we must not underestimate him as a composer of operas. Many of his operas such as Pique Dame and Eugene Onegin are still performed regularly throughout the world. Eugene Onegin (also called Jevgeny Onegin), composed in 1877-1878, was not called an opera by Tchaikovsky himself, but lyric scenes. The work is entirely dominated by lyricism. However, there are two moments that contrast sharply with this lyricism: two ball scenes, for which Tchaikovsky wrote a waltz and a polonaise. After opening with a less well-known allegro dansant, this arrangement features the aforementioned waltz, which can be considered a beautiful Russian equivalent of the Faust Waltz by Charles Gounod. In the opera, this waltz is actually played by a military band. The arrangement concludes with the pompous polonaise (also mentioned above) which opens the last act: the ideal music to characterize high aristocracy in the salon of a palace in St. Petersburg.Duration: 3:30
