Flight of the Griffin - Brian Balmages
This exciting new work is based on the griffin, a mythological creature native to India, having the head, legs, and wings of an eagle, and the body of a lion. Starting with open 5ths in the clarinets, slight elements of Indian music are introduced as the work builds to its opening theme. A powerful middle section combines elements of chamber playing and full ensemble. The closing section represents the actual flight of the griffin, bringing the whole piece to a dramatic ending. The Eagle's Quest was commissioned by Brevik Musikkorps (Norway) to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of Cort Adeler, a renowned Norwegian-Dutch sailor who was born in the town of Brevik in 1622. His Dutch name Adelaer means eagle. This work celebrates his life but is not programmatic, simply reflecting Brevik's pride in one of its most famous sons. Towards the end of the piece there is a brief quotation from the town song, Brevikssangen, which is a fitting and captivating conclusion.Duration: 6.45
