Robert the Bruce and the Spider (Concert Band - Score Only) - Fraser, Bruce

King Robert the Bruce was hunted by King Edward the First of England and, so the story goes, was hiding in a cave. According to legend, he watched a spider attempting to climb a tree whilst weaving a web. It failed many times, but finally reached the top. This action gave Robert the Bruce the encouragement to persist against the English ant at the Battle of Bannockburn the English were defeated by the Scots. The rhythm which opens the piece in percussion spells out Robert the Bruce and this is used with an unusual effect in the middle section from the Percussion section, where the players gradually raise their sticks above their heads whilst beating out the Robert the Bruce rhythm pattern.

At the Feast of Stephen - Traditional / arr. Scott Watson

This novel setting of the traditional carol "Good King Wenceslas" will musically transport you and your students to the royal Christmas banquet hall of a medieval king! The old carol tells the story of a legendary 10th-century monarch, Duke Wenceslas of Bohemia, who went out in the severe cold to give charity to the poor on December 26, also known as St. Stephens Day. The well-known 13th-century carol tune, as well as additional original material in period style, vividly conjures a lively celebration of Christmas in the high Middle Ages. Come now ye lords and ladies to the Feast of Stephen and upon your instruments faire make most merry this Yuletide! (2:31) This title is available in SmartMusic.

The Swords of Stavanger - By Robert Sheldon

The unification of the Viking tribes is of great significance to the people living in the southwest region of Norway. The International School of Stavanger lies only one kilometer from a small fjord called Hafrsfjord where a monument, "Swords in Stone," was constructed consisting of three large bronze swords stuck in an outcropping on the shore. The monument commemorates a battle which unified the Viking tribes of Norway under one king, Harald Hrfagre, or Harald the Fairhaired. According to legend, in 872 Harald invited the other tribal leaders to a meeting, then had his boats cut off their retreat and they battled until the other leaders submitted to Harald's rule. Harald then became the first king of Norway. The Swords of Stavanger seeks to provide a musical backdrop to this legend of Viking heroism and conquest. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

The African Connection Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Carl Wittrock's wide interest in global folk-music resulted in this concert-piece based on original African rhythms. Obviously, the percussion section has a conspicious role to play, but the band too may indulge itself in moments of thoroughly delightful excitement. The introduction depicts the awakening of nature, and develops into a dance. The (main) motif of this dance is from a dance entitled Apollo and comes from Gambia. Its accompaniment consists of an ostinato pattern by balaphon-master Maudo Susa. The quiet middle movement is based on the rhythm of the 'gigbo' : a traditional dance from Ghana. In the final movement -which also bears a slight resemblance to a theme from 'The Lion King'- the so-called 'Kono' rhythm is used. The work is played most advantageously using djembes. Challenge and please your percussion section with 'The African Connection'. 06:30

The Butterfly That Stamped Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

The Butterfly that Stamped is a story from the anthology Just So Stories, written by Rudyard Kipling for his daughter who suffered constant bad health. The book inspired composer Maxim Aulio to compose this work which is in a French impressionistic style. The piece opens with a beautiful palace surrounded by the impressive gardens of King Solomon. It is in these gardens that the baritone saxophone makes its appearance representing King Solomon himself, the flute representing the butterfly couple, the clarinet representing Queen Balkis and the trumpet the djin.
