Nol Nouvelet is a traditional French carol that dates from the late 15th century and the early 16th century. The song was long ago translated into English as Sing We Now of Christmas. The word nouvelet has the same root as Nol, both stemming from the word for news and newness. Nol Nouvelet literally means Christmas comes anew, Some sources say it was a New Year's song. But others point out that the lyrics all speak of the news of the birth of the Christ child in Bethlehem, the announcement by angels to the shepherds in the fields, looking forward to the visit of the Three Kings and the presentation of their gifts to the Holy Family. Zion Hears the Watchmen Singing (Zion hrt die Wchter singen) is the fourth of seven movements of Bach's cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme ('Awake, calls the voice to us'), BWV 140, also known as Sleepers Wake. It is regarded as one of his most mature and popular sacred cantatas. It is written in the style of a chorale prelude, with the phrases of the chorale, sung as a cantus firmus by the tenors (or by the tenor soloist), entering intermittently against a famously lyrical melody played in this arrangement in unison principally by the woodwinds. Bach composed the chorale cantata in Leipzig for the 27th Sunday after Trinity and first performed it on 25 November 1731. John Rutter (b.1945) is one of England's best known composers of choral literature. While his choral works, including Te Deum, Magnificat, and Requiem, are the most familiar, he has also written numerous instrumental works. Rutter composed the "Nativity Carol" for SATB chorus and organ in 1963, and it was published in 1967 as part of a collection entitled Carols for Two Choirs. As with Gladness Men of Old is an Epiphany hymn, written by William Chatterton Dix on 6 January 1859 (Epiphany) while he was ill in bed. Though considered by many as a Christmas carol, it is found in the Epiphany section of many hymnals and still used by many churches. The music was adapted by William Henry Monk in 1861 from a tune written by Conrad Kocher in 1838. The hymn is based on the visit of the Biblical magi in the Nativity of Jesus. The hymn used Matthew 2:1-12 as a theme to compare the journey of the Biblical magi to visit the baby Jesus to each Christian's personal pilgrimage and as a reminder that it is not the value of the gifts, it is the value of giving and adoration to Jesus that is what Christians should seek. It is the only well-known Epiphany hymn or carol about the Biblical magi that avoids referring to them as either magi or kings and does not state how many there were. It Came Upon the Midnight Clear (1849), sometimes rendered as It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, is a poem and Christmas carol written by Edmund Sears, pastor of the Unitarian Church in Wayland, Massachusetts. Writing during a period of personal melancholy, and with news of revolution in Europe and the United States' war with Mexico fresh in his mind, Sears portrayed the world as dark, full of sin and strife, and not hearing the Christmas message. In Commonwealth countries, the tune called Noel, which was adapted from an English melody in 1874 by Arthur Sullivan, is the usual accompaniment. This tune also appears as an alternative in The Hymnal 1982, the hymnal of the United States Episcopal Church. David Willcocks' arrangement brings a modern excitement to the piece, which would not have been out of place all those centuries ago. The Latin text is translated: 1. Resonemus laudibus cum jocunditatibus ecclesiam fidelibus. Let us make the church resound with the joyful praises of the faithful. Apparuit quem genuit Maria He whom Mary bore has appeared. 2. Deus fecit hominem ad suam imaginem et similitudinem. God made man in his own image and likeness. 3. Deus fecit omnia caelum, terram, maria cunctaque nascentia. Silent Night (German: Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. It was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. Over the years, because the original manuscript had been lost, Mohr's name was forgotten and although Gruber was known to be the composer, many people assumed the melody was composed by a famous composer, and it was variously attributed to Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven. However, a manuscript was discovered in 1995 in Mohr's handwriting and dated by researchers as c. 1820. It states that Mohr wrote the words in 1816 when he was assigned to a pilgrim church in Mariapfarr, Austria, and shows that the music was composed by Gruber in 1818. This is the earliest manuscript that exists and the only one in Mohr's handwriting. The song has been recorded by a large number of singers across many music genres. This haunting setting by David Willcocks also includes slight textual alterations to the piece that has been translated into about 140 languages. The First Nowell is one of the oldest Christmas folk songs going back to at least the 1600's. We cannot be sure who wrote it, but both France and England claim it as part of their heritage. The spelling of the word Noel would indicate it to be French, however, England claims the original spelling was the English version Nowell. The singing of The First Nowell and the lighting of the yule log became tradition among the peasants in England and was passed down from generation to generation. It was not until 1833 that it was published and soon after was sung in Church services.
