Franco Cesarini was commissioned to write A Glorious Fanfare by the Band Association of the Zug Canton in Switzerland (Zuger Blasmusikverband), to celebrate the centenary of the Association (1922-2022). The composition is the third in a trilogy of scintillating concert opening pieces (which make up opus 38), together with A Triumphant Fanfare and A Joyful Fanfare. A majestic fanfare entrusted to the trumpets introduces the piece. Subsequently a cantabile variant of the same theme is presented leading to a finale with rich and impressive sounds. A city is founded, it has a heart that beats. But visible achievements such as buildings and infrastructure merely bear witness to what its true heart is made of, the people who have lived, and still live, in the city. The pulse of the city, brought to life by its heartbeat, changes over time. Who hasn't seen those time-lapse images showing twinkling lines of car lights as people make their way to work, while others stand at traffic lights, only moving as if at the push of a button? These are like life flowing in the veins, driven by a strong heart. Leonardo da Vinci had already imagined the rivers as the blood vessels of the Earth. In any city, though, it's not the rivers but the movement and activities of the people who live there. The heart doesn't always beat steadily, however, but its rhythm can be influenced by joy, fear, and many other things. Every city has its own pulse. This is also true of the university city of Marburg, where people from over 100 nations now live together in a cosmopolitan and tolerant community. In 2013 the short film 1805 A Town's Tale was released, produced by Refos Film, with music by Otto M. Schwarz. A fateful autumn day in the year 1805: the morning mists hang heavy over the sprawling field near Drnstein. The captain's tent and some smaller tents are seemingly lifeless in their deep slumber. In dawn's half-light, the fires now only steam and barely glow. A figure sneaks past the main tent. This is Phillipe, a soldier of Napoleon's troops, leaving the camp early to warn Mina, his lover, and the other inhabitants of the town of Krems of the planned raid. The Symphonic Suite is a compilation of various main themes from the soundtrack.Duration: 9.45

A Little Klezmer Suite was commissioned by Rushton Park High School to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their band programme. They gave the premiere in a virtual online concert in October 2020. Klezmer music originated in the shtetl (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as klezmorim, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Klezmer is a Yiddish term combining the Hebrew words kley (instrument) and zemer (song). The roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish hazanut (cantorial music) and also the nigunim, the wordless melodies intoned by the Hasidim (orthodox Jews). The melodies used in the four movements of A Little Klezmer Suite have traditionally been used in Jewish wedding ceremonies and celebrations. Duration: 7.45

Future Celebration was composed on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Royal Socialist Wind Band 'De Toekomst' from Sint-Niklaas (Belgium). In this colourful compostion Kevin Houben succeeds in evoking the bustling textile and cigar industry of the nineteenth and twentieth century in this East Flemish city Sint-Niklaas. After all, these crafts were characteristic for the wealth they brought to the city. Still testimony of this are the 2 unique (niche)museums in Sint-Niklaas: the Knitwear museum and the Pipe and Tobacco museum. Even in times of great crises eg. during the Interbellum the city continued flourishing proving the unique collection of classified art deco houses, amongst others the former People's House, in which the Royal Socialist Wind Band still rehearse. This historic background of Sint-Niklaas and of the Wind Band in particular has been musically presented by Kevin Houben in Future Celebration. The brief, but energetic and powerful opening of the work by the brass instruments gives musical expression to Sint-Niklaas as a prosperous city. After the presentation of a majestic and lyrical theme by the woodwinds an allegro with a cheerful theme takes a look at the future, hopefully looking at the next milestones/ celebrations the city and its orchestra are still expecting in the future. Suite from the Incidental Music. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809 - 1847) composed the music for William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream at two different times. In 1826, at the age of 16, he wrote a concert overture (Op. 21). Sixteen years later, in 1842, he composed the incidental music (opus 61) for King Frederick William IV of Prussia, in which he incorporated the existing overture. The overture premiered in Stettin (then in Prussia, now Szczecin, Poland) on February 20, 1827, conducted by Carl Loewe. Mendelssohn had to travel 80 miles through a raging snowstorm to get to the concert, which became his first public appearance. The first British performance of the overture was conducted by Mendelssohn himself on June 24, 1829, at the Argyll Rooms in London. After the concert, Thomas Attwood was given the score of the overture for safekeeping, but left it in a taxi and was never found. Mendelssohn later rewrote the overture entirely from memory.Duration: 14.45
