The Saints and the Royal was composed on behalf of Royal brass band St. Willibrord Heeswijk on the occasion of its 200th anniversary in 2023.When the marching band was founded in 1823, it was given the name "Harmonie Sint Cecilia," referring to Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music. Around 1904, the name was changed to 'Kerkelijke fanfare Willibrord', strongly emphasizing the connection with the church in Heeswijk, of which Saint Willibrord is the patron saint. In 1973, at its 150th anniversary, the band received the predicate 'royal'. From that time on one speaks of the Royal brass band Saint Willibrord.The composition musically depicts both Saints Saint Cecilia and Saint Willibrord and the jubilee royal brass band. Although one of the oldest musical societies in the Netherlands, this fanfare is alive and kicking and will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2023. The composition therefore opens festively and energetically. The alto saxophone plays a recitative, the Gregorian "Cantantibus organis Caecilia virgo in corde suo soli domino decantabat" from the vespers of the feast day of Saint Caecilia, the patron saint of music. This is taken over by the full wood and soft brass group. After a brief, playful interlude, this chant is played by the full orchestra, like an organ, larded with circumambulations.St. Willibord was born in England but made the crossing to the Netherlands in 690 to preach the gospel as a missionary. This was far from harmless and he faced frequent uprisings. After his death he was buried in Echternach in Luxembourg. In this place he is commemorated to this day with the annual "Spring Procession" or "Dance Procession". This procession of Echternach went as follows until 1947: 3 steps forward, 2 steps backward. Hence we hear this procession back in a 5/8 measure: 3 + 2.After this procession, the Gregorian vesper of Sint Caecilia sounds one more time, leading the composition to a reprise of the opening: The jubilee Royal Fanfare Sint Willibord Heeswijk.

(NL)From pride and admiration for this exceptional jubilee , but also out of gratitude for his many years of commitment as musician and member of the board, the association chose to have a memorable work written.That assignment resulted in the wonderful choral Hidden Light, for which composer Kevin Houben based himself on the following emotions and oppositions: small vs majestic, submissive vs royal and simplicity vs glory.The work starts in a very modest, dark atmosphere, after which the composition develops into a grand and lofty sound with broad melodies, exploring the full richness and colors of the 'symphonic' wind band.The interesting variety in orchestration - the small , intimate setting at the beginning and the following broad, majestic tutti passages - makes the work very varied, grateful to perform and to listen to.With Hidden Light Kevin Houben has again created an expressive and powerful composition that is highly reflective in nature. Future Celebration was composed on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Royal Socialist Wind Band 'De Toekomst' from Sint-Niklaas (Belgium). In this colourful compostion Kevin Houben succeeds in evoking the bustling textile and cigar industry of the nineteenth and twentieth century in this East Flemish city Sint-Niklaas.After all, these crafts were characteristic for the wealth they brought to the city. Still testimony of this are the 2 unique (niche)museums in Sint-Niklaas: the Knitwear museum and the Pipe and Tobacco museum. Even in times of great crises eg. during the Interbellum the city continued flourishing proving the unique collection of classified art deco houses, amongst others the former People's House, in which the Royal Socialist Wind Band still rehearse.This historic background of Sint-Niklaas and of the Wind Band in particular has been musically presented by Kevin Houben in Future Celebration. The brief, but energetic and powerful opening of the work by the brass instruments gives musical expression to Sint-Niklaas as a prosperous city. After the presentation of a majestic and lyrical theme by the woodwinds an allegro with a cheerful theme takes a look at the future, hopefully looking at the next milestones/ celebrations the city and its orchestra are still expecting in the future.

'Proven' was composed by Kevin Houben on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Royal Wind Band 'De Volksvreugd'meaning ' People's Joy' in 2021.As its name suggests the musical band of the West Flemish village , municipality of Poperinge (B), had to bring joy againto the people. At that time there was still a striking industry of woodworkers, including that of slat splitters and hoop cutters.Moreover the cultivation of hops, necessary for the brewing of beer, remained important. Shortly after World War I theassociation was founded in the cellars of the brewer- mayor.Soon the joy was not only experienced by its listeners but also by its members. Already from its foundation onwards, thecandidate musicians flocked in and still nowadays 'De Volksvreugd' can take pride in having more than 100 members in itsyouth orchestra, having a drum band, an ambiance band and a wind band. Participation in tattoo and competitions ensuresan excellent musical level. Moreover musicians of all ages feel like family. For the previous 100 years 'De Volksvreugd' has'proven' to bring joy to the people and by the people. The chant 'Long live the Volksvreugd/ People's Joy' clearly provesits popularity.This energetic and festive composition has a very recognizable and powerful introduction, after which each musician ischallenged concerning technique, rhythm and ensemble playing. Also the magnificent melodic part, which Houben iswell-known for, is very melodious and intimate followed by a lyrical highlight to culminate into an energetic and rhythmicalfinal. Ideal for any concert!
