Originally written in the key of C, this version has been changed to B-flat to help the piece become more accessible to the maturing concert band.

The Choral Fantasy varies from the Choral Prelude in that it is much freer in form and style. This number opens with a variation of the fanfare that has been traditionally inserted as an introduction and interlude between stanzas. The chorale is then presented in a traditional harmonization by the full band. The second section is in a faster tempo, and is based on statements of the opening motive of the hymn presented in fugal style.

The form is similar to the composer's earlier Balladair (AABCAA) with a modulation leading to a final extended statement of the opening melody, serving as a codetta.

The work is simple in conception but full of the characteristics that have been trademarks of Erickson's compositions for band. It begins simply with the snare drum stating its simple cadence. This is followed immediately by the melodic line carried by the unison trumpets. The work becomes two-part at the measure before rehearsal 7 as the trombone and the baritone add lower countermelody to the texture. The full ensemble finally enters in the measure before 11 with beautiful sonorous lines.
