Jazz Suite No. 2 - Finale - Dimitri Shostakovich

In 1938 Shostakovich composed his Second Jazz Suite at the request of the recently founded State Orchestra for Jazz conducted by Victor Knushevitsky. This suite was originally scored for a complete symphony orchestra to which four saxophones, an accordion and a guitar had been added. The Jazz Suite no. 1 in three movements, composed in 1934, had been written for a smaller ensemble. The title 'Jazz Suite' is rather misleading, as the composer definitely uses the style of light music. Back in 1928, the twenty-two-year-old Shostakovich had already composed some light music. A bet among friends to make an orchestration of the popular song 'Tea for Two' in less then one hour time, causedhim to compose 'Tahiti Trot'. Shostakovich easily won the bet as he completed the original and witty arrangement within only forty minutes!

A Little Irish Suite - Marco Pütz

A Little Irish Suite is an original work composed specifically for the Compact Band Series. This series offers smaller ensembles the opportunity to perform original, high-quality works. A Little Irish Suite consists of three movements, all based on Irish folk tunes. Clear structure and crisp harmonies complemented by plain, comprehensible melodies, are characteristic of this piece. It offers conductors the opportunity to work on tone, balance, phrasing as well as on technique with their ensemble. As with all works in the Compact Band Series, A Little Irish Suite features optional parts for instruments that are played less frequently. Conductors can pickand choose the parts needed to best fit the music and the musicians available, to determine the best possible instrumentation for their own ensemble. The duration of six minutes and the large variety and contrast of material played in A Little Irish Suite also make it an ideal selection for competitions or festivals.

Orpheus in Town, Dance Suite from (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Rosenberg, Hilding - Johansson, Jerker

Dance Suite in Seven Movements. Op.75. Orpheus In Town. In 1936 the Stockholm Concert Hall was given its most distinguished artistic adornment, Carl Milles' Orpheus fountain. A Greek god lets his voice and the sounds of his lyre float over the rush and bustle of the big city far up in Ultima Thule. Two choreographers at the Stockholm Opera, Julian Algo and Vera Sager, had a brainwave. Why should Orpheus merely be a statue, a symbol of the beauty and inspiring power of music, why not give the myth about him its special Stockholm chapter as well? This is what happened: On the stage we see the columned facade of the Concert Hall and in front of it the statue group with Orpheus and the eight enraptured listeners. Suddenly the figures come to life, jump down from their pedestal and dance into the crowd at the marketplace. Orpheus, who is consumed by longing for Eurydice, begins looking for his beloved, first among other well-known sculptures in town, then in restaurants and nightclubs. At last he thinks he recognises her in a fashionable society woman and brings her to the Concert Hall. However, faced with the threat of having to spend her life in bronze at Orpheus' side, she runs away. She wasn't Eurydice after all. Or was she? For this ballet, which had its first performance at the Stockholm Opera in 1938, Hilding Rosenberg wrote vital and entertaining music in a style which is unusually to the point, and with a bright and strong orchestration. The music in the Dance Suite from Orpheus in Town is taken from the dance scenes at the nightclub: guests and a bartender perform, finally also Orpheus and his entourage. The suite consists of: 1. Rhythm of the Times (2.00); 2. Bartender's Dance (1.30); 3. Girl's Dance (1.00); 4. Dance of the Negress (2.30); 5. Trio Dance (1.30); 6. Tango (2.00); 7. Finale (1.30). Total duration: 14.00.

The Seville Suite, Highlights from (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Whelan, Bill - De Meij, Johan

The success of Bill Whelan's Riverdance evolved from a concept for music and dance that he established earlier with The Seville Suite, his first major orchestral composition. The Seville Suite was commissioned for Ireland's National Day at the World Expo 1992 in Seville, Spain. Through the score, Whelan tells the story of legendary Irish war hero Red Hugh O'Donnell. At a mere 21 years of age, O'Donnell successfully led a rebellion against the English government in 1593. Johan de Meij's arrangement is an adaptation featuring highlights from the original suite. Jig (from St. Paul's Suite) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Holst, Gustav - De Meij, Johan

Together with his good friend Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst had a strong liking for the abundant folk music of the British Isles. This influence is heard in many of his works and is perhaps strongest in his Second Suite for Military Band and in the Saint Paul Suite for string orchestra. This work was composed in 1913 for the school orchestra of St. Paul's Girls School in London, where Holst was the Director of Music. The suite opens with this exuberant Jig, a dance originating from Scottish and Irish folk music in alternating duple and triple time (6/8 and 9/8), which has been expertly arranged for concert band. The Irish Washerwoman (from The Irish Suite) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Anderson, Leroy

The Irish Washerwoman, the first movement of Leroy Anderson's Irish Suite, combines folk material with the composer's own whimsicality. The score was commissioned by the Eire Society of Boston and carries a dedication to Arthur Fiedler, who conducted its first performance on June 6, 1947 at Symphony Hall in Boston. The complete suite includes six melodies which range from the nostalgic to the humorous, from the plainly sentimental to the purely exuberant. Although the melodies come from overseas, the brilliant Irish Suite is typical of Anderson's nimble orchestration, ingenious charm, and happy inventiveness. This opening movement is a jig; brisk in tempo and gay in mood. This edition has been freshly re-engraved with a full-score for the first time, permitting articulation uniformity throughout the work.Duration: 3.00

Finnish Folk Song Suite (Wind Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

In this moderately easy suite, Jan Van der Roost uses four authentic folk tunes from the Swedish-speaking part of Finland. These are from Nagu, Oravais, Lappfjrd and Karlebynejden, and have been joined together without pauses to form a continuous suite. The work begins with noble, almost meditative melodies. Gradually the tempo becomes faster, resulting in a brilliant and cheerful folk dance. The melody regularly goes from one band section to another ensuring that the timbre remains varied and there is no question of monotony. This is an attractive suite which is within the range of the majority of concert bands.Duration: 7:45
