    Addio Napoli is a medley of well-known Neapolitan melodies, including Torna a Surriento by Ernesto de Curtis (1875-1937), Neapolitan Dance by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) - which he used in his famous ballet, Swan Lake - Maria, Mari!, a Neapolitan song by composer Eduardo di Capua (1865-1917), and of course, Funicul, Funicul by composer Luigi Denza (1846-1922).     Slavonic Dances No. 7 & 8 - Antonín Dvo?ák - Wil van der Beek

    In 1878, on a commission from his publisher, Antonn Dvork wrote a series of eight Slavonic dances. Modelled on Johannes Brahms' famous Hungarian Dances, although in contrast to Brahms' work, Dvork used no original melodies. Wil van der Beek has arranged No. 7, a brisk 2/4 dance, as well as No. 8, a passionate, exuberant furiant in 3/4.

    The German composer Joseph Ignaz Schnabel (1767-1831) was a descendant of a musical family. During his lifetime he occupied several musical posts including Violinist, Organist, Concertmaster, Conductor, Music Teacher and managing director of the Royal Institute for Church Music. Schnabel composed masses, hymns, vespers, military music and a clarinet concerto. His choir work Transeamus usque Bethlehem is still widely performed and Wil van der Beek has produced this excellent arrangement for concert band which does justice to the original.

    In 1950, Pope Pius XII selected Marche Pontificale from the OrganSymphony No. 1, by French composer Charles Gounod, as the officialhymn of the Vatican. The first rendition of the official hymn took placein the same year, in Saint Peter?s Square in Rome, played by sevenmilitary bands.
