A Bluegrass Overture - Philip Sparke

A Bluegrass Overture was commissioned by Gabriel Wooley and funded by a grant from Leslie and Cathy Anderson for the Central Kentucky Concert Band to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2016.This energetic overture opens with an introduction loosely based on 'bluegrass' chords before a slower, legato chorale appears in the clarinets and flutes. This is short-lived and soon a new mood is introduced, based on a repeated-note accompaniment. This leads to the main theme, heavily syncopated with bluesy inflections.A central section features a cantabile melody, which changes key frequently, before the main theme reappears, leading toa triumphal presentation of the earlier chorale melody.

A Boy's Dream - Jay Bocook

Written as a commission for the Palmetto Consortium of South Carolina, this expansive work explores the delight, wonderment and excitement of a young boy's hopes and dreams. Several stylistic elements combine to depict various emotions and imaginings. In the words of the composer, a boy's dreams are fantastical and mysterious, show great curiosity and yet most importantly, they are innocent and credulous. A terrific and fresh work for winds! A Brussels Requiem - Bert Appermont

The attacks in Brussels on 22 March 2016 created a shockwave throughout Belgium and the rest of the world. Equally, the attacks in Paris and Nice led to great public indignation, fear and disbelief.Bert Appermont's intention was to voice certain emotions that these acts of terror have caused: particularly fear, grief, anger, and helplessness. He uses the French children's song Au Clair de la Lune as a connecting thread throughout the work.

A Calypso Christmas

Feliz Navidad (Jose Feliciano), Brazilian Sleighbells (Percy Faith), and the always popular Silver Bells are cleverly combined in a calypso/Latin style that gives this medley a great new twist for a holiday concert. And of course,it has plenty of percussion effects to feature.

A Caribbean Sailing Trip - Peter Kleine Schaars

With this composition in a rumba style, Peter Kleine Schaars invites us to enjoy a relaxed sailing trip in the waters of the Caribbean. The feeling of freedom on the boat is mirrored by an extensive melody surrounded by a palette of colourful harmonies the shades of the water while the clever percussion sets the course of the ship. Who wouldn't dream of such an adventure? Although the musical themes and accompaniments have been constructed from combinations of rhythmic cells that occur less often, the composition sounds very natural and flowing. Assuming the rhythmic cells 1 to 8 are part of the basic skills of your band, in this composition, the accent rather lies on cells 9 to 13. The instrumentation is created in such a way that these 'new cells' occur in all parts, so that all musicians of the band become familiar with this rhythmic development.
